What the Main Water Line Does
Why Hose Bibs Start Leaking
If you have ever walked past your outdoor spigot and noticed a slow drip (or worse, a puddle forming underneath), you are not alone. Hose bibs take a real beating. They sit outside year-round, getting blasted by sun, frost, and everything in between, so it is no surprise that your hose bib eventually give out.
Most of the time, the culprit is a worn-out rubber washer inside the valve. These washers harden and crack after a few seasons of heavy use. Another common reason is freeze damage. This is the water that is left in the pipe over winter and it expands and splits the bib from the inside, and you won’t notice until spring.
Loose packing nuts, corroded threads, and a hose that has been cranked on too tight can also cause leaks. The good news? Most fixes are cheap and doable in an afternoon.
Signs of Main Water Line Problems
How We Diagnose and Repair the Line
We start with a thorough inspection to confirm the problem. This includes checking the pressure, examining the meter, and identifying whether the leak is inside the home or outside in the service line. Once we locate the issue, we determine whether the best solution is a spot repair or a full line replacement.
Repairs involve exposing the damaged section, replacing the bad portion, and ensuring the pressure and flow return to normal. If the pipe is aging, brittle, or failing in multiple areas, a complete replacement provides long-term protection and stronger reliability.
